Substance Abuse
The prescription drug abuse challenges this country faces today is being fueled by both legal and illegal sources. Addiction to prescription medication is a major contributor to the opioid epidemic, and, in many cases, the medication is prescribed by physicians with good intentions for legitimate reasons. From here, the outcomes are unpredictable because people respond differently to pain medication, specifically how it affects them emotionally. A doctor may prescribe a painkiller for a medical issue (i.e. heart surgery, etc.), and while delivering physical relief, it’s euphoric properties can easily become attractive to someone that is also struggling with emotional issues. If the individual becomes emotionally addicted, when the medical issue is resolved and the doctor stops prescribing the medication, this person will need to find another source of supply, and if not through another doctor, then on the street. When money becomes an issue, as it often does, heroin and fentanyl become a cheaper, but sadly, a more deadly option. Some of the commonly used opioid prescription drugs are oxycodone, Hydrocodone, morphine, Codeine, Methadone, Demerol, Oxymorphone and Carfentanil. These substances are distributed under various other names such as Vicodin, Norco, Lortab, OxyContin, Roxicodone, Percocet, MS Contin, Kadian, Dilaudid, Dolophine and Opana.
The reason we are experiencing so many opioid overdose deaths is because there is no way of knowing the actual potency of a substance purchased illegally. Various street drugs are being laced with Fentanyl or Carfentanil. Fentanyl, due to its small molecular size, is very dangerous because it is easily absorbed through the skin upon contact. Carfentanil, a fentanyl analog is a powerful narcotic developed for use as an anesthetic on large animals. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Carfentnil is roughly 100 times more potent than Fentanyl, 5000 times more potent than heroin and as much as 10.000 times more potent the morphine.

A Day in the Life
A typical day at New Life involves spending quiet time at our private residential guest home near the beach in Orange County under the supervision of New Life Spirit Recovery staff. Various supervised outings allow for clients to enjoy the gorgeous community of Huntington Beach. A structured schedule is provided every day at our clinical office for groups, classes, one on one counseling, family programs, education and workshops.
